When Should You Replace Your Above-Ground Pool Liner?
Pool liners don't last forever. Here are the most common warning signs that it might be time to schedule a liner replacement for your above-ground pool.
Wrinkles that won't smooth out
Some wrinkles are normal early on, but liners that keep wrinkling or pulling away can mean the liner has stretched, shifted, or is at the end of its life.
Fading, cracking, and brittleness
Heavy fading and brittle spots - especially near the waterline - are a sign the liner is breaking down. Once it cracks, leaks aren't far behind.
Stains, slow leaks, and water loss
Stubborn stains and unexplained water loss usually point to liner issues. Catching this early can save the base and the pool itself.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the liner is failing and not just dirty?
Look for wrinkles that keep coming back, a bead that pops out of the track, brittle or faded vinyl at the water line, and staining that does not brush off. Those are wear, not dirt.
Is losing water always a liner problem?
No. Evaporation and splash out can look like a leak. Run a bucket test first, and if the pool is dropping faster than the bucket, then start hunting for a hole or a fitting.
Can a liner be patched?
Small punctures in sound vinyl patch fine. Once the material is brittle, a patch just moves the next tear a few inches over, and that is the point where replacement is the cheaper answer.
What is the best time of year to replace a liner?
Warm weather. Vinyl stretches and seats properly when it is warm, so a liner change in cold New England air is much harder to get flat and tight.
